We recommit ourselves to antiracist work within our own community. We recommit to listening to and uplifting Black voices. We recommit to identifying and eliminating ways in which our own department unwittingly upholds systematic racism. We are committed to listening to the voices of our students.
The Department of Mathematical Sciences at DePaul University stands in solidarity with Black students, faculty, staff, and community members. As such, we are called:
-
To reaffirm our commitment to social justice, equity, and inclusion for all persons, especially African Americans and those from groups which have historically been underserved in the mathematical sciences.
-
To listen to and support our Black colleagues and students, as well as those from other underserved groups.
-
To stand up when we see racial injustice and to work to understand how our own implicit biases affect our students and colleagues.
-
To engage in critical discussions that urge each of us to create structures in which every student can be fully engaged in our democratic society.
-
To create an avenue of communication for students or faculty who struggle with any aspect of our department climate.
Please know that you may reach out to the Diversity Advocate for CSH, Dr. Cricel Molina de Mesa (cricel.molina@depaul.edu) for additional support.
We are reminded of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s words: “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” That includes the space within our office walls.
Sincerely,
Your friends in the Department of Mathematical Sciences
