Our Department’s Commitment to DEI
Diversity, equity, and inclusion are core values of DePaul University and the Department of Psychology. Research has demonstrated that diversity improves critical thinking, problem-solving skills, perspective-taking, civic engagement, and intercultural understanding that enhances our academic community and psychology as a scientific discipline. We value the multiple, intersecting social statuses and identities that members of our community have, including but not limited to: ability status, age, class, culture, ethnicity, gender expression, gender identity, national origin, political beliefs, race, religion/spirituality, sexual orientation. We recognize that any list of identities is incomplete and imperfect and yet feel that it is also important to name specific axes of marginalization. We recognize too that these identities are situated within systems of power, privilege, and oppression. We commit ourselves to promoting inclusive, positive environments through our teaching, advising/mentoring, research, and service. We strive to continually engage in individual and collective reflection, and action to better address barriers experienced by individuals of diverse backgrounds.
