Students pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematical Sciences may choose from one of six areas of concentration: Actuarial Science, Applied & Computational Mathematics, Financial Mathematics, Pure Mathematics, Quantitative Analysis & Operations Research, or Statistics. In consultation with a faculty advisor, students may also design an Individualized Concentration.
Actuarial Science Concentration
Actuarial Science uses mathematics, statistics, and financial theory to study uncertain future events, especially those that relate to risk management and insurance programs. This concentration prepares students for work in such areas as the insurance industry, financial consulting firms, and government.

Applied & Computational Mathematics Concentration
The Applied & Computational Mathematics concentration is intended for any student who enjoys mathematics, problem solving, and applications to solving practical problems in business, government, and science. The concentration is especially intended for students seeking careers as quantitative analysts, computational scientists, or applied mathematicians, and for those considering additional graduate-level study of applied or discrete mathematics.

Financial Mathematics Concentration
The Financial Mathematics concentration is designed to help students develop both theoretical and practical knowledge related to knowledge. Students complete upper-level mathematics coursework relevant to contemporary financial mathematical modeling, and also complete the equivalent of a Finance Minor from the Driehaus College of Business.

Pure Mathematics Concentration
The Pure Mathematics concentration provides students with a broad exposure to the main areas of contemporary mathematical investigation. This concentration is especially recommended for students who are considering additional graduate-level work in mathematics or a related field.

Quantitative Analysis & Operations Research Concentration
The concentration in Quantitative Analysis & Operations Research is recommended for students who are interested in the mathematics of decision making. This concentration provides students with the mathematical background to work in finance, computer applications, and production scheduling and forecasting.

The Statistics concentration offers students a solid foundation in probability and statistics. Statisticians are employed by government, industry, marketing research companies, and consulting firms to design surveys and experiments, and to analyze data. This concentration is recommended for students who are interested in identifying and solving problems using data-based analytical approaches.

In consultation with a mathematics faculty advisor, and with the approval of the department chair, students can design an individualized program of study leading to a degree in mathematics.
