Dr. Byrd's background is in primary care. She received her BSN and MS (family nurse practitioner track) from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, and her DNP and Post-Masters Nurse Educator Certificate from Johns Hopkins University. Her research interests include health promotion and disease prevention and primary care disorders, especially ear, nose, and throat disorders. She has presented on primary care topics at the local, state, and national levels.
Dr. Byrd has experience working as a family nurse practitioner in several different areas including family medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, urgent care, occupational health, and otolaryngology. She has been teaching in schools of nursing since 2008, including the University of Texas School of Nursing and the University of Oklahoma College of Nursing. She has experience teaching in traditional bachelor's and master's entry prelicensure nursing programs, family and adult nurse practitioner programs, and post-masters DNP and BSN to DNP programs. She received the faculty excellence award for academic teaching from the University of Oklahoma College of Nursing in 2021.
