Ten students in DePaul's Clinical Psychology M.A/Ph.D. program have been awarded highly competitive 1-year internships at doctoral training sites across the nation. The program is among the most rigorous, training students to become scientist practitioners who provide compassionate care to traditionally underserved groups, including children, teens, and families from minoritized backgrounds.

The program's curriculum teaches students to understand social and systemic barriers to mental health equity and has two tracks – one focused on community clinical psychology, and the other on clinical child psychology. Both tracks require core courses, a clinical practicum, and the 1-year clinical internship necessary for program completion.  These internships are in high demand, accepting only the most qualified students.

“Students apply to internship sites, interview, submit rank order listings, and then wait to hear the results of the match in a process similar to that of medicine. Unlike medicine, however, these students don't get awarded their Ph.D. until they have completed internship and their dissertation," says Susan Tran, psychology associate professor and director of clinical training.

This year's internship sites range from the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles to the Harvard Medical School Brigham and Women's Hospital, a globally prominent teaching hospital with 150 outpatient practices. DePaul students competed with a large number of candidates for these highly desirable slots.

“This is one of the most stressful components of clinical training because there are usually more applicants than accredited spots and you can't graduate without this internship. These students showed incredible amounts of determination as they went through the process," Tran shares.
