CSH Advisory Council Strategic Priorities

Purpose of the Advisory Council

The College of Science and Health (CSH) of DePaul University provides high quality, personalized, and accessible science and health education to a diverse student body, grounded in the values of St. Vincent de Paul. The CSH Advisory Council's charge is to provide guidance and expertise that assist the Dean of the College. The Council does not hold nor maintain fiduciary or governance responsibility; it serves to assist the Dean in enhancing the educational, research, and service-related missions of the College and the University.

Purpose

To ensure that the College of Science and Health is welcoming to all, and representative of the diverse CSH community while supporting the college in strengthening alumni engagement and connection with the college.

Plan

To build a diverse, broadly represented advisory council that will support the college in its ongoing work to fulfill its mission, of meeting its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) commitments and sustaining an anti-racism environment within the CSH.

Objectives

  • The council will work collaboratively with the dean, chairs, and program directors in developing strategies to support efforts associated with student recruitment, retention, and persistence, while fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment.
  • The council will actively work to recruit diverse advisory council members that will bring to the existing council their resources in the form of their professional expertise, networks, and philanthropic support.
  • The council will work to communicate to the alumni community about the current direction and/or state of the college and the status of DEI initiatives.
  • The council will work to provide feedback from the alumni perspective to school leadership on its progress towards improving the student experience.

Measurable Goals

  • The advisory council members will attend both the fall and spring meetings in-person or remotely unless a formal absence excuse is submitted in writing in advance of the meetings.
  • At least fifty 50% of the Advisory Council will participate in or serve on at least one college or Council related committee that supports strategic priorities. This could be in the form of the college strategic planning steering committee, one of the various strategic priority planning committees, or a departmental level advisory or strategic planning committee.
  • The Council will work in the development, review, and maintenance of various committees that serve to meet the strategic priority goals of the council. These committee meetings will record meeting minutes and attendance.
  • One of the council committees will focus on advisory council Recruitment and Retention. This committee will facilitate the recruitment process and be responsible for hosting at least one advisory council recruitment/retention initiative each year. This will be done collaboratively with alumni events that are conceptualized within the college or by advancement and/or alumni relations.
  • Council members will notify the college of personal or fellow alumni accomplishments, awards, or recognition that exemplifies career success possibilities and pathways for CSH students.

Purpose

To assist the college with the strategic goal of sustainable growth by supporting efforts that make the educational journey affordable for academically qualified students through philanthropic endeavors.

Plan

To ensure that all council members are actively engaged in relevant college advancement opportunities, including philanthropic contributions, direct outreach, solicitation, and engagement.

Objectives

  • Form a Development Committee that fosters support for the college and its students through fundraising, stewardship, and engagement of alumni. The chair of the council will chair this committee.
  • All council members will support the college through an annual gift to the College of Science and health that is personally significant to them depending on their individual circumstances. Detailed giving levels are in the CSH Advisory Council Bylaws. The source of this gift may be from you personally, a corporate gift, matching funds, or solicitation of someone you introduce to the college.

Measurable Goals

  • 100% of the council will contribute to CSH annually.
  • Members of the council philanthropic committee will participate in outreach to designated constituents for support of the college.
  • Support will be provided to all council members by the Director of Development in order to successfully engage alumni and friends in philanthropy.

Purpose

To foster a culture that ensures that CSH students and alumni have distinguished career and graduate successes.

Plan

The formation of a Career Development Committee that works in conjunction with college departments, academic programs, and DePaul career services to identify strategies to support opportunities to develop and connect CSH students with career development, networking, internships, and graduate studies.

Objectives

  • Propose an alumni career development-working group to identity and track organizations, businesses, and/or individuals who demonstrate significant support for CSH students through career development and internship opportunities.
  • Propose the creation of an CSH Alumni Award to recognize organizations, businesses, and/or individuals who demonstrate significant support for CSH students through career development and internship opportunities.
  • In collaboration with the College’s departments/programs work to identify internship and career opportunities, guest speakers, and other support to best meet the needs of current CSH students.

Measurable Goals

  • The Career Development Committee will actively seek classroom and on-campus speakers, internship, and job opportunities to connect current CSH students to future careers.
  • The Council will annually sponsor a specific CSH award that recognizes organizations, businesses, and/or individuals who demonstrate significant support for CSH student’s career development and internship opportunities.
