Community-Based Service Learning (CbSL) in the MENP Program
Community-Based Service Learning (CbSL) is an academic service-learning approach that prepares nursing students to understand and address the complex factors influencing health in and beyond the clinical setting. Through meaningful engagement with community partners, students explore how social determinants of health (SDOH)—such as economic stability, health care access and quality, neighborhood environment, and social/community contexts—shape health outcomes and contribute to health inequities.
CbSL emphasizes reciprocal partnerships with communities and prioritizes work with populations who are disproportionately affected by health disparities. Students gain firsthand insight into structural and systemic influences on health while developing the skills needed to promote equity, advocacy, and culturally responsive care.
The community engagement program was developed by the DePaul University School of Nursing in conjunction with the DePaul University Steans Center for Community-based Service Learning.
