The mission of the College of Science and Health is to prepare leaders in the sciences and healthcare who are committed to cultivating equitable, socially just, and anti-racist environments. Through authentic experiences in the classroom and community, we educate our students to be engaged citizens prepared to exercise their knowledge of science and medicine in a manner that upholds the dignity of all people. DePaul University is committed to the anti-racist work required to achieve equitable service of our community. We must work together to challenge the status quo, and continue asking hard questions despite answers that may pose discomfort to those in positions of privilege.
Advancing Equity and the Common Good in Science and Health: A Commitment from the College of Science and Health
At the College of Science and Health (CSH) at DePaul University, we are called to foster a more just, inclusive, and compassionate society through the transformative power of education, research, and community engagement. Rooted in DePaul’s Vincentian mission and Catholic values, we affirm the dignity of every individual and commit ourselves to the common good.
We acknowledge that science, health, and education have long existed within structures shaped by exclusion, inequity, and systemic bias. These realities have created barriers to access, trust, and opportunity for many—particularly for communities that have been historically marginalized and underserved, including but not limited to racially and ethnically diverse populations, first-generation students, individuals from low-income backgrounds, and those with intersecting identities related to gender, sexual orientation, disability, religion, age, and immigration status. As educators, scientists, and practitioners, we cannot separate ourselves from these histories; we must face them with courage and a readiness to do better.
But our commitment is not only about what we resist—it is about what we build. We commit to cultivating learning environments that empower all students, faculty, and staff to thrive. We commit to a curriculum and scholarship that reflects multiple perspectives and knowledge systems. We commit to transforming the systems, practices, and assumptions that perpetuate inequity in science and health. And we commit to leading with empathy, humility, and integrity as we partner with our communities in service and solidarity. We do this work not out of obligation, but from a deep belief in the potential of our College—and of each member within it—to be a force for equity, healing, and systemic change.
This is our shared responsibility and our collective calling.
