The purpose of the program leading to the degree of Master of Arts in Mathematics Education is to improve the quality of mathematics instruction in schools within the greater-Chicago area and to offer a response to the shortage of secondary school mathematics teachers.
This six-quarter degree program is offered on an accelerated basis during intensive weekend sessions and may be taken while in-service at the rate of two courses per quarter. However, students may proceed through the program at a slower pace depending upon their individual needs. The emphasis in the program is on mathematical content, but significant amounts of time are spent on methods of incorporating new teaching strategies and technologies in the classroom.
The program is directly tied to secondary curriculum needs and is directed toward previously or currently certified teachers with degrees in non-mathematics fields, to teachers with bachelor’s degrees in mathematics who wish to upgrade their command of the field, and to bachelor’s degree holders in other fields who wish to enter teaching.
DePaul University offers the only graduate program in the area for
teachers and prospective teachers of mathematics that meets on the
weekends and can be completed in a year and a half. It is not necessary
to have been a math major to enter this program. Upon completion of the
program, graduates will have learned basic concepts and techniques
- Differential and integral calculus of one and several variables,
numerical algorithms related to calculus, and implementation of these
algorithms using graphing calculators and web-based software
- Euclidean and non-Euclidean geometry using software packages that emphasize content connected to the high school curriculum
- Discrete mathematical structures with an emphasis on logic, proof, and mathematical reasoning
- Probability and statistics with an introduction to combinatorics
- History of elementary number theory, algebra, and geometry
- Topics in abstract algebra which relate to high school courses in algebra, geometry, and trigonometry
Students will also study
- Issues relating to the structure of mathematics curricula
- Methods and current research results for teaching mathematics
- Use of graphing calculators and web-based software as teaching tools

Location and Schedule:
The program meets weekends at the Lincoln Park Campus (Sheffield and Fullerton Avenues).
Length of the program:
Almost all courses during the academic year at Lincoln Park meet five
weekend days. The program can be completed in as little as six quarters
or over a longer period of time depending upon the needs of the
48 credit hours on the quarter system consisting of mathematical content
and pedagogy directly tied to secondary school teaching.
The program is for currently certified high school or community college
mathematics teachers who want to upgrade their skills and earn a
Master's degree, currently or previously certified teachers in
non-mathematics fields who wish to change disciplines, bachelor's degree
holders in other fields who wish to obtain the mathematics background
appropriate for teaching at the high school or community college level. Apply Online
